I thought about posting this last night, but I shy away from politics.

As someone who is very centric, has voted on both sides of the ledger, and usually it’s one thing either way that sways my vote either way, this is confusing.

Im hoping someone can explain to me the benefits of cutting Special Olympics funding, as well as funding for developmental programs in public schools that cater to those w/ Autism Spectrum Disorders and others. I know a lot of media is going to be slanted, so don’t just want to take the clickbait titles as truth. I’m trying to believe there is some reason why this was proposed, and it’s not just for allocating those funds to military or other well funded programs.

For this I am completely and totally biased, and fully admit that. I have a son who is disabled, who currently benefits from these programs. While my family is lucky enough to be able to support him, even w/o any assistance from the school or govt, I know some of his school pals aren’t. If it’s cuts to this program are to benefit even something noble like cancer research, or aide to military families, my heart is still w/ these kids, but I could at least see the reason. Won’t necessarily change how I vote, but my impression might @ least change.

I want to keep an open mind, and be informed so hoping someone could shed some light.

As you may know, the federal dollars allocated to the Special Olympics goes towards the clubs and activities in the schools--they're in 7500 schools (as opposed to the televised international competitions). The benefit (from the conservative perspective) is that we spend less money on children with disabilities. Ms. Devos thinks that the federal dollars that are cut will be offset by private donations.

Spoiler Alert: They won't. One of the BIG things about government spending is it can direct meaningful levels of funding to programs that private citizens would not sufficiently fund out of sheer generosity. Too many people are too greedy to donate at all, and to a certain effect taxes are an effective way to take in and allocate funds based on big picture things that individuals dont have the perspective to see.

Wasn’t there a discussion previously in this thread about the Marvel tv shows not living in the movies universe?

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones both make references to the Battle of New York (2012 Avengers) in their respective shows. So they are in the same timeline and what-not.

Yeah, Guru didn't realize that they were. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, Agents of Shield, and Agent Carter are all in the MCU.

Here's the tricky thing. Marvel Studios moved to be under the umbrella of walt disney studios while marvel television is still under the umbrella of marvel entertainment.  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/marvel-shake-up-film-chief-819205 has a good writeup on the split. but the MCU tv shows are under marvel television and thus they've stopped referencing movie events and the idea of a crossover is a lot less likely.

Why were the feds involved in the Special Olympics in the first place? As the article states, there is already plenty of support at the local and state levels. The Dept of Education is slowly being eliminated and Devos is just overseeing this process. Soon, her job will be eliminated also. The shift is to end all federal involvement in education and give more power to the states. States will have more tax dollars to use as they see .

Federal government was involved to help protect and make sure these programs had funding. If I am a state, I could just cut funding for special needs children especially in poorer neighborhoods. You also assume a state equally and proportionally spends its tax dollars on all of its citizens equally, which is obviously not true.

If money is the issue here, why didn’t she cut funds for charter school expansion?

that one's obvious. She, despite having never attended a public school in her life things choice is the singular solution to all the problems american education faces. She doesnt comprehend among other things that by creating charter schools and letting them gain access to the funding the department of education provides based on student enrollment, she's supporting a system that further spreads resources too thin. Say you take half of the students from school A and enroll them in new school 1. when the funding follows students from A to 1, the fixed costs of running a school stay behind and now have less funds to cover them

(Misk I assume you know a lot of this so its mostly for the other readers)

I like that idea.  I have always wanted community gardens to be built and maintained in poorer neighborhoods.  I know in certain areas in Chicago it is hard to get fruits and vegetables but super easy to get processed and junk food.  If you created these gardens, appointed and payed people to maintain them (with the support of an organization too), I think it would help communities get healthier as well as get a sense of pride for their communities.  It won't fix every issues, but I do think a lack of pride in your neighborhood leads to violence and crime.

The term for this is called a food desert. Basically its where there's a lack of things like grocery stores where people are dependent on replacements such as convenience stores.

I live in a very rural area where people dohave to travel more than an hour to reach a "grocery store". We have a lot of convenience stores but they seem to be carrying a larger selection of whole foods now. Fresh meats. Has been a definite change in the last few years.

I live in the middle if amish country. There's roadsides stands everywhere with fresh fruits and vegetables. Most have logs where you write down on a log what you picked out and pay your money in a lock box. I always try to take jelly jars back to the booths I get them from so they can wash them and reuse. Same with all the tater boxes.

That's pretty awesome. I love buying jellies and preserves from amish/mennonite communities.  As far as the SNAP, I don't think SNAP should be stigmatized or hard to use. I love cash benefits and support any movement towards going away from coupons to more of a cash or cash-equivalent system.

I know in Louisiana people on SNAP have a debit card of sorts that is used.  Better than the old days of "food stamps".

Iirc debit card is standard. It interfaces with the payment system and flags any items it cannot be used to pay for, paying for the rest.

I love PR, but not getting this game. It's too much a port of legacy wars, and I dont want the developer to think there's a huge market for mobile ports on console.

Read the article. The owning family commissioned an investigation into their family’s history. Didn’t like what was found so is taking steps to try to make things right.

It’s widely known that DC doesn’t read articles he posts

I was posting more for anyone else that might stumble into this thread. I know DC doesnt see my posts because he boasts about ignoring anyone he disagrees with.

Injuries suck. I was sure that was your beef with him. Im inclined to think he didnt try to injure rogers, but the rules were that it was a legal tackle.
