I think this works out fine for the Lakers honestly. It'll force AD into playing center, which despite him not wanting to do, the team will be better off if he does.
I think they'll just move McGee to start at C.
This part of AD's chapter in the NBA is all about control right? So I doubt he'll enjoy being forced to play a position he doesn't want to play when part of the team pitch was to give him the freedom to do what he would like to do as the future face of the franchise.
McGee becomes the starter or they trade for one is my guess.

Only 3.5M. The Lakers will probably receive an injury exception, which will be 50% of that. So, roughly, the same as the vet minimum exception. Therefore, doesn't matter. Only advantage, I guess, is that it will not count towards the cap. Not sure it matters.
