i was just gonna say a split decision...maybe the legend polamalu may cause people to drop some of their SS and price will come down even more..I have been unimpressed by burnett back there and 90k for toty bethea seems pretty cheap for a 95.
I just made this decision yesterday. I went with Berry. I was using MF Polamalu and was looking to upgrade. There are only 3 important stats that Bethea has over Berry. Awareness, Play Rec, and Hit Power. Berry's 90 hit power is decent enough. It is still more than Polamalu's 85 and he has been doing just fine. Berry's awareness and play rec are only 7 and 6 points lower respectively. I really doubt the difference is noticable. I would expect Berry to react to plays the exact same way 95% of the time. Bethea also has 9 more strength. I don't think it is that important, but it is worth mentioning.
In my opinion, there are 7 important stats that Berry has over Bethea. Speed (only 1 but still), Acceleration (5 more. This helps a lot), catching (high catching is important to me in my secondary), jumping (5 more jumping in addition to being an inch taller), Stamina (6 more for a total of 98), Spectacular Catch (39 more. Bethea only has a 42. He has 34 more CIT also, but I'm not sure if this one matters on defense. Spectacular Catch above 80 is huge for a safety in my opinion.), and Pursuit (8 more for a total of 90. This stat is huge for safeties).
Another thing to consider is this. Even though Berry is a 93, not all of these MVPs are created equal. They made every single one a 93 overall. I think that some play above that and some play below. Berry should really be more like a 94 or 95. They just slapped a 93 on it so all MVPs would have the same overall. As someone mentioned above, Berry is definitely the clear choice if you user your safety. I rarely user my safety, but it was still an easy decision for me. Berry has already broken up a few plays in the few games I've played with him that Polamalu wouldn't have gotten to. The speed, acceleration, and pursuit are pretty important. You can't make the play if you can't get there in time. I will hopefully get the 97 Berry one day.
Yeah, I moved MF Polamalu to SS2 and he still sees the field quite a bit. It works out well on plays where Berry comes up and Polamalu stays deep. Plus, now Polamalu can wreak havoc on special teams. When it comes to replacing players on defense, I usually hang onto players with decent speed, hit power, and awareness for special teams/backups as long as they aren't worth a lot. I don't mind having players worth up to 30K sitting at the number 2 spots.
maybe i will pick up another polamalu for that reason...is it like a quarter formation that gets him on the field? I think another good thing about picking up berry is that it will ease some of the pain from selling his 97 uf I gifted which I wanted to spend on FO wilson who i promptly got rid of. lol
Excellent analysis, Stevenam81! I don't user my SS either so I want someone back there that can do it all. Whether it's coverage, blitz, etc. Berry just does a better overall job. Bethea is great for hit power but I like Berry overall, for all the tasks at hand. And, I wholeheartedly agree with Polamalu at SS2. I use him there as well and he does quite well in my blitz packages and special teams, as you highlighted. Couldn't agree more, on all counts.
Berry has been great for me, but I've played against Bethea and he is always blasting someone. If Bethea's price keeps dropping I may give him a try, but I was able to complete a lot of passes in his area even though he was good for a few blasts on me. I have good CIT receivers so he didn't knock the ball loose. Like I said if the price drops more I may try him out, but Berry has given me no reason at all to switch. You can't go wrong with him. I'm sure his 97 card is amazing. Wish I could afford it.
